Metrocascade – The Blog

Interesting conundrum

Posted by: metrocascade on: March 5, 2009

Looking through Twitter Elite in Victoria, I came across bonspiel creation. Bonspiel (Ellen) has an Etsy store through which she sells fabulous leather creations – bags, purses, cuffs – silkscreened with wonderful designs.

So I asked our team to put her into the cascade (on MetroCascade), particularly after I read the great interview in Etsy’s Storque, Quit Your Day Job: bonspielcreation. “This woman rawks – I want to throw a spotlight on her!” was my thinking.

But somehow, updates from an Etsy store don’t quite fit into “news and conversations,” so we have (temporarily) deleted her feed from the cascade. On the other hand, finding her site and thinking about how this local entrepreneur is making a life for herself – and modeling the process for others, especially in terms of dedication to customer service and quality of products – made me realize that we need to think about diversifying our cascade.

It won’t happen overnight (because we have plenty of other things to work on first), but I think we’ll need a separate “Commerce” cascade, just for the entrepreneurial local business person, especially those who are producing and selling goods and services online to global customers, but who are locally based and would benefit from local exposure.

Meanwhile, …can I get myself this fabulous bag, please? :-)

Ellen stuff is amazing Yule — unbelievably talented girl. I purchased a gift for my very stylish sister a couple christmases ago; she was very pleased, quelle surprise ;-)

Wow, good to hear, Ty, and what about that 2-degrees-of-separation mojo at work in Victoria again? What are the chances our site designer bought a bag from a woman I blog about? Gotta love proximity here!

Hi guys! I’m sitting here with a strained knee, can’t do anything so I decided to google myself, and found this. Thanks for the writeup! I do work hard to support myself with my art/design and love local people’s support. Even though I sell to folks all over the world through my etsy shop it’s still the best to meet them in person and see them pull things out of their purse they got from me years ago and still use.
Thanks again–ellen

I hope your knee is better soon, Ellen! Glad you found this blog entry!

Love the bag I bought from you – whenever I wear it, I get lots of positive comments, and then I make sure to explain exactly how people can find you. I hope business is ok for you. It’s a tough market right now for everyone (well, ok, not for everyone, but for many, that’s for sure). You make quality products, that’s a fact, and they are a joy to use.
