Metrocascade – The Blog

A first curation!

Posted by: metrocascade on: July 10, 2009

It’s Friday, we’re heading into a fabulously sunny and warm weekend. But first, here are some highlights from what showed up on the MetroCascade “Read” cascade in the past few days…!

Given the great weather, it’s only natural that the athletes would be blogging up a storm, but if you take a look at the Sports category, you’ll see that they’re busy regardless of the season. This past week, we had Olympian Simon Whitfield posting four times, with a fun music video, some commentary on pro cyclists, and a plug for two worthy charities.

Ok, that’s just Simon. There are other athletes (pro and amateur) who posted this week. They include Dirge Rhetoric with commentary on Life Expectancy, Geoff Martinson, and a training book recommendation; and a blog called A Runner’s Tale (which in this entry describes how not every attempt is …a peach).

But most especially the trainharder bloggers have been super-busy. There’s Donald “Jarhead” Peterson – his blog is titled Jarhead’s Running Myths & Misadventures – Running tales from Vancouver Island and beyond…; The Running Diva; and Hugh Trenchard: trainharder not only trains harder, they blog harder, too: 20 entries since July 3 (at present count, Friday afternoon). There’s some serious energy here! Quite a few of the entries are about nutrition, so if that’s an area of interest, check out Jarhead’s entries.

Speaking of food, that’s a serious topic around here, too, with overlap between the health nuts and foodies. It comes with the territory, since Victoria’s reputation as both an outdoor sports mecca and (increasingly) a culinary destination is growing.

Before I point to some food blogs, though, one last pointer to an exercise blog called The Gym is my new boyfriend. There are some deep, deep image issues this blogger brings forward: check out her Unsugar Coated Reality entry (ok, it’s from July 2, already 8 days old, but it’s too relevant to skip).

Does the rest of the world know that Sarah Kramer (of tattoo fame and vegan epicurean delight) also blogs? And not just about food;-)

Check out the food category to see just how many folks are blogging this topic (and keep in mind that MetroCascade’s categorization “algorithm” (ha!) is still a bit haphazard, and there may be other bloggers writing passionately about food, but are not captured in our category.

Busiest this past week were the Coffee Crew guys. They range widely, discussing local coffee shops, but also literary insights into shadegrown coffee and the joys of a good Challah French Toast with one’s coffee.

If coffee and toast aren’t sustenance enough, check out the Victoria Buffet Blog whose authors cover the various buffets around town, including the one on BC Ferries (that’s our link to the Canadian mainland). It’s enticing enough to make me want to make that trip…

The Buffet Blog is not to be confused with the Victoria Burger Blog, which is the go-to source for burger info in Victoria. Here’s a link to an entry from last month, on burgers at the Provincial Legislature’s cafeteria. Bureaucrats and burgers …eat them up, yum!

It’s not all epicurian delights and the pursuit of physical ideals around here, though. Next time I’ll point to the very active political bloggers in Victoria. Or maybe point out the many talented photographers we’re lucky to have here. At this point, I’m still easing my way into this curation business – eventually, I hope to eschew focus on isolated topics, and just point you to highlights you shouldn’t miss. For today, however, I’m offering a glimpse at what hides behind the categories, and encourage people to explore all the interestingness that Victorians are producing…

Happy browsing!

Thanks Yule for undertaking this massive work for us. I appreciate the time you take in order to make sense of the over 200 blogs you have inventoried to this point in Victoria.

Thanks, Janis – I figure it should be interesting, and could help knit some communities together. Arts bloggers, anyone?? ;-)

[...] hope soon will be). To date, I’ve posted five “curations”: the first one (called A First Curation!) was really long, the second (Highlights from the firehose) shorter, and the third (The [...]
